Critical Incident Stress Management Course for Police Managers

Purpose

To provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities for the strategic planning and practice to effectively manage critical incident stress of employees during and after critical incidents.

Course Content

  1. Key terms in critical incident stress management
  2. Common psychological/behavioral reactions
  3. Strategic planning and practice of critical incident stress
  4. One on one crisis intervention
  5. Large group crisis intervention
  6. Small group crisis intervention
  7. Critical incident stress debriefing.

Student Selection Criteria

This training is designed for law enforcement managers who must assume and retain a critical incident stress management role during a crisis situation. The methodology taught allows police agencies to better manage stress within their team(s) and minimize the impact of ineffective coping mechanisms and burn-out that arise during a critical incident situation.

Other students outside law enforcement will be considered on an individual basis.

Student Assessment

Students will be required to demonstrate a functional understanding of the concepts, methodology, and practical application of crisis management skills during a series of practical exercises and a case scenario. Students will be evaluated individually and in small groups.

The Canadian Police College issues a certificate of achievement to students who meet the student evaluation requirements for this course.

Successful students will also receive a Critical Incident Stress Management - Basic , certification from the International Critical Incident Stress Management Foundation (ICISF).
