This course is for individuals working in law enforcement in support of Indigenous communities and who have had some supervisory experience and who are ready to accept the leadership challenges of more senior or complex managerial roles. Students learn how to improve and adapt their personal management and leadership skills to meet changing social conditions, specifically as they relate to Indigenous communities. Topics covered include leadership and management concepts, leading high performance teams, issue analysis and problem solving, business case development, ethics, conflict resolution, and accountability.

- Knowledge of personal leadership and management styles and their impact on Indigenous policing organizations and the communities they serve.
- Understanding how to integrate reflection and continued personal development into the role of manager and leader in an Indigenous policing organization.
- Understanding how to apply strategic planning within an Indigenous police organization.
- Understanding how to apply theories and practices of effective human resource management.
- Knowledge of the theories and practices of police accountability.
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to Indigenous members of the law enforcement community who have recently been promoted to manager or who are officers in preparation of a possible promotion.
- Indigenous members must have the support of their immediate supervisor and two years of supervisory experience. Experience can relate to managing agency-wide or national level programs or supervising personnel exercising a variety of functions.
- The college takes into consideration the organizational structure and/or rank when reviewing submissions for the course. You may be asked to submit a letter from your immediate supervisor as a supporting document for admission to the course.
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College.
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments, written and practical.
- Pre-course material involves completing a Leadership Practice Inventory (LPI).
- Various evaluation methods are used, including: a pre-course assignment, writing an issue analysis, in class presentations, keeping a learning journal, submission of a business case, and a final oral presentation.
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor.
